Who was Napoleon Bonaparte?

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) was a French military general and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and its aftermath. Born on the island of Corsica, he rapidly advanced through the ranks of the French army due to his strategic brilliance and leadership skills. In 1799, he seized power in France through a coup d’état and later crowned himself Emperor of the French in 1804. Napoleon is best known for his role in reshaping Europe through the Napoleonic Wars, a series of conflicts that involved most of the continent. His military campaigns spread many revolutionary ideals such as legal equality, meritocracy, and secular governance, which were embodied in the Napoleonic Code—a legal framework that influenced many modern legal systems worldwide. Despite his initial successes, his expansionist ambitions eventually led to his downfall, culminating in his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and subsequent exile to the island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
